  • Course Description

This is an introductory-level studio art course, designed for students with all artistic ability levels and skills. Students will explore various materials, techniques, concepts, and processes essential to understanding the visual arts and the role of the artist, work on individual projects and studio studies to develop basic drawing and painting skills, learn design concepts, and further develop hand-eye coordination and fine-motor skills. The art projects are designed to enhance and nourish such skills as creative problem-solving and critical thinking while developing individual styles. Students will demonstrate their ability to respond, analyze, and interpret their artwork and the work of others through discussions.

We will focus on enhancing skills such as:

● Creativity
● Boosting confidence
● Collaboration
● Growth mindset
● Organization
● Problem-solving/Critical thinking

Each week, our class time will spent as follows:
● Sketchbook Art Prompts
● Concept focus using the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design
● Hands-on projects corresponding with that week’s concept focus

  • Required Materials

● 9x12 *Mixed Media pad : 60 pages or more (see note below)

● Basic sketch pencil set with eraser included (click here for example)

● Art Marker Set (click here for example)

● Colored Pencil Set (Prismacolor is a great option)

*A basic sketchbook will not be sufficient for this class. Please purchase a Mixed Media pad. Basic drawing paper will peel when wet, but a Mixed Media pad is designed to hold up to wet mediums. We will have a handful of painting projects throughout the school year.
